Remote working in Lockdown

March 2020.

On the 5th March, Artists in Residence, Gareth, Sonia and Elinor met for the first and only time in person.

Our first brief was to create Hold Music.

“Your call is very important to us. Please hold.”

— What kind of music can you bear to listen to when put on hold? To find out, we interviewed the Drake Music staff members to find out more about Drake Music and what kind of music we should create to meet their “hold music wish list.”

On our first and only day together, we interviewed several Drake Music Staff. The types of questions that Sonia, Gareth and I chose to ask included questions like:

1) What does Drake Music sound like?

2) What colour is Drake Music?

3) How long is the perfect loop?

4) What kind of music excites you?

5) How did you find out about Drake Music?

Tom: It’s quiet, it can

be very quiet.

Carien: And trees and birdsong and green.

Miryam: Textured

Journeys.

Louis: It’s like the wind, the way it moves.

Joy: I like the sound of the rain.

The hold music brief was quite literally put on hold.

A different brief was given to Sonia and I as our third AiR had to take Compassionate Leave.

Sonia and I were forced to collaborate digitally due to Lockdown.

Lockdown by Elinor Rowlands

Listen.

These are my sound collages in a track list of the individual tracks of the Staff Members. There is one missing is Carien. This is because it was a joint effort with bird sounds with fellow Artist in Residence Sonia, so only the ones where it was all my own work and sound design has been included here.
